In the academic essay competition of students, the results of research group work were presented. The academic essay competition was held in memory of Prof. S. O. Zastrovska in May 2023 as part of the annual Science Days of the Lesуa Ukrainka Volyn National University. The competition was organised by the Department of German Philology of the Faculty of Foreign Languages. 25 academic essays were submitted for the competition. The competition on the topic of Academic Integrity comprised various stages. Firstly, a call for entries was published in which the topic was presented and the conditions of participation explained. This was followed by registration and submission of essays: students were able to register for the competition and submit their final essays within the specified deadline. Plagiarism was checked using the StrikePlagiarism.com and Unicheck software. The jury assessed the essays submitted by first-year students and selected the most promising participants. The selection was based on criteria such as originality of ideas, relevance to the topic and quality of writing. The essays had to demonstrate clear arguments and linguistic precision, as well as a clear and concise structure. The winners were announced by the organisers and honoured for their achievements with prizes and certificates. The best essays were published. The organisers sought feedback from participants to improve the competition for future years and ensure that it has a positive impact on promoting academic integrity. The variety of topics of the submitted works, which were formulated by the students independently and according to their interests, should be emphasised. In their essays, the participants in the competition attempted to clarify questions such as: What is academic integrity and what role do motivation and self-motivation play in academic activity? The organisation and implementation of the competition contributed to increasing the effectiveness and quality of the students’ research work. The cognitive activity of the students was activated and the motivation of all participants in the educational process was strengthened.
Olena HALYTSKA Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/964 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 ACCESS TO THE ARTS: MOBILE LEARNING, AUGMENTED REALITY IN DECORATIVE AND APPLIED ARTS https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/965
In the article, the authors highlight the issue of access to art during the pandemic through mobile learning, the use of immersive technologies, augmented reality tools, in particular wireless headsets. A number of scientific studies on the theory and practice of media education by Ukrainian and foreign scientists were analyzed. Based on this, the content of the concept of "media literacy" is revealed. Attention is focused on the lessons of Ukrainian literature, namely on the opportunities that appear with high-quality training and cooperation between the teacher and the student. The use of interdisciplinary connections in the educational process is defined as an effective way of forming schoolchildren's media literacy. The important place of the textbook in the lesson as the main source of information and one of the means of realizing interdisciplinary connections is emphasized. The educational and methodological support for Ukrainian literature for the 6th grade of the New Ukrainian School was studied and the presence of recommendations for the use of interdisciplinary connections was demonstrated, in particular in model curricula (authors’ collectives of M. Chumarnaya, N. Pastushenko and T. Yatsenko, V. Pakharenko, O. Slyzhuk) and the presence of a corresponding system of media texts, exercises, and illustrative materials in the school textbook "Ukrainian literature for the 6th grade" (by O. Kalynich, S. Dyachok, edited by Yu. Kovbasenko). Based on this, the most common academic disciplines with which parallels can be drawn when studying Ukrainian literature are distinguished, namely: Ukrainian language, foreign literature, all types of art, natural science, basics of health, geography, labor training, history, mathematics and informatics, religious studies , psychology, etc. It is noted that the authors O. Kalynych and S. Dyachok aim to promote the development of systemic thinking, creative imagination, the ability to distinguish and generalize, critical thinking, deep world perception and the formation of one's own picture of the world. It has been proven that the analyzed textbook is an effective tool in the process of forming sixth graders' media literacy in the implementation of intersubject connections that ensure the deepening of the learned, generalization and systematization of material from all subjects by students.
Maria HUDZ, Nataliya HRYTSAK Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/966 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 BLOG AS A TOOL OF FOSTERING DIGITAL LITERACY AND COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL EFL LEARNERS https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/967
The paper addresses the issue of linguistic and didactic peculiarities of English blogs as a tool of forming EFL secondary school learners’ digital literacy and communicative competence. The acuteness of this research is determined by the necessity to make further exploration of the role of blog-technologies in enhancing students’ digital habits and fostering online interactive skills. The objective of the paper is to define language features of English blogs and to outline the ways blogs can be used in EFL teaching. Ukrainian national secondary school curricula indicate that a foreign language speech competence is achieved through acquisition of a number of skills, including the ones that are gained within informational and digital sphere that include the ability to learn a foreign language with the help of computer programs and social networks, to interact via informational-communicative technologies, to design foreign language digital products, to conduct a goal-oriented online communication etc. The above mentioned program requirements give reasons to state that an English blog can be viewed as a tool of fostering an overall foreign language speech competence including the skills of an online interaction. Incorporating blogs in the instructional service aims at managing and administering the educational process, improving EFL learners’ digital literacy, developing lexical and grammatical knowledge and habits, enhancing communicative skills of online blogging interaction and increasing motivation in a foreign language acquisition. In order to provide a systemic and successive teaching online interaction to secondary school students it is reasonable to stick to the following sequence of blog activities: teaching netiquette and enlarging the set of digital skills; teaching communicative strategies in commenting blog posts and linguistic framing of commentaries per se; teaching designing individual and group blog posts as coherent and cohesive texts that appeal to the reading audience and include audio-visual content and hyperlinks.
Olha DOLHUSHEVA, Viktoriia KOCHUBEI Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/967 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGIES IN MUSIC LESSONS IN A SECONDARY SCHOOL https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/968
The current state of computer technology use in art classes in secondary schools is changing and continues to develop. Computers, software, and the Internet have significant potential to improve the learning process and empower students. And one of the priorities of education reform is to foster a creative personality with associative and critical thinking. Implementation of a creative approach to teaching the native language is impossible without the development and implementation of appropriate technologies. This can be achieved by creating an interactive environment. The experience confirms that traditional forms of teaching do not always arouse interest in learning and, therefore, do not produce effective results. The use of game technology in Ukrainian language and literature lessons adds variety to the learning process, strengthens the acquired knowledge, develops communicative competence, creative inclinations of students, increases interest in learning, and reduces psychological stress. The article is devoted to this issue. It is noted that the State Standard of Basic and Complete Secondary Education defines the importance of personal orientation of education, which provides for the provision of appropriate conditions for the comprehensive development of each student, taking into account his or her individual characteristics, cognitive needs, interests, aspirations, and encouraging independence in learning, self-knowledge and self-development. To achieve this, the educational process should be structured as closely as possible to the needs and capabilities of a growing personality. A kind of effective means of motivating students to learn, to communicate, to self-realize, to enjoy learning is a learning game. The article examines the history of game technology and presents aspects of its research. It is noted that the use of game technology in teaching humanities to students of general secondary education institutions is of particular importance, since the game is a well-known, familiar and favorite form of activity for a person of any age; it overcomes difficulties and psychological barriers more easily; it is motivational in nature: it makes it possible to develop several competencies at the same time; it produces mainly collective, group or pair forms of work; it has a final result. It is emphasized that there are many classifications of games in linguodidactics. If we consider the game from the point of view of target orientations, then it can be divided into didactic, educational, developing, socialized. According to the nature of the pedagogical process, there are educational, training, controlling, generalizing; cognitive, educational, developing; reproductive, productive, creative orientation. According to the content of the Ukrainian language lesson, games are divided into games on phonetics, lexicology, morphology, syntax, spelling, punctuation, and development of coherent speech. It is noted that game technologies can be used at every stage of the lesson, depending on the purpose of learning, to update basic knowledge and skills; to learn new material; to test knowledge; to consolidate and to summarize the material learned; to control the acquired knowledge. It is noted that, depending on how long the game lasts, the following stages can be distinguished: preparatory (where students get acquainted with the rules of the game, are divided into teams, and receive task packages); main (where tasks are performed); final (where results are analyzed and evaluated, mistakes are corrected, and winners are determined). The article provides vivid examples of the use of game technologies that have been tested in 5–9 grades of general secondary education institutions.
Ruslana MELNIKOVA, Kateryna ANHELOVSKA Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/969 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 TEACHING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (ENGLISH) IN MECHANICAL SPECIALTIES, PROBLEMS AND PERSPECTIVES https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/970
The article is a study of the problems and prospects of teaching a foreign language (English) in mechanical specialties. It was found that the formation of students' media competence skills takes place in primary school and continues during the adaptation cycle of basic education. Elementary media literacy skills, formed in the adaptation cycle of basic secondary education, are the basis for modeling various types of educational tasks on Ukrainian literature for grades 7-9. Taking this into account, correlations require directions for the formation of media literacy. It has been proven that the promising directions for the development of media literacy of students-readers of grades 7-9 in the process of their literary education are orientation in information sources, the ability to use them in compliance with the rules of academic integrity; meaningful perception of media texts in relationships with artistic texts; development of critical thinking, the ability express one's own opinion about what has been read using the latest media; development of media creativity based on read works of art; visual literacy and the culture of perceiving works through audiovisual media; mastering the basics of working with online tools.
Olesia SLYZHUK Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/973 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 METHODS OF COGNITIVE ACTIVITY FORMING OF PRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN MUSIC LESSONS https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/974
The article is devoted to one of the urgent problems of modern music pedagogy – the formation of cognitive activity. Its purpose is to theoretically substantiate the method of forming the cognitive activity of younger schoolchildren in music lessons, in particular, to highlight the essence of the concept of “cognitive activity”, to determine the indicators of its formation, to single out its most effective methods and to solve the ways of solving this problem. Based on the review of scholarly materials, an encompassing understanding of “cognitive activity” has been developed. This concept is seen as a superior characteristic and a key factor in the growth and self-enhancement of a person who can demonstrate inventive problem-solving during educational music activities. The article emphasizes the great potential of music education, which is one of the important factors of globalization processes characteristic of modern dynamic society. Emphasis is placed on the importance of developing and implementing innovative methods of active learning aimed at creative development and formation of an educated, multifaceted and competent personality. After analyzing scientific texts, a method to foster cognitive activity in schoolchildren has been justified. This involved identifying markers of its development, which demonstrate the evolution of knowledge from mere replication of acquired information to creative application. It also includes integrating diverse attributes of knowledge quality, along with both theoretical and practical endeavors. It is also noted that the method of forming the cognitive activity of primary school students consists in identifying the most effective methods and ways of its organization, which contribute to children’s interest in musical art, in particular, encouraging students to independently search for information and develop their intellectual activity. The approach to developing cognitive activity in younger students, beyond employing musical and didactic games, includes executing various unconventional tasks in music lessons and organizing unique lesson formats. It has been remarked that the scholar attempted at stereometric reception of the text. In particular, he consistently considered the entire paradigm of the folklore artefact, and identified the crucial factors stimulating active development of the theme. Through the prism of analytic evaluation of the existing variations of the “Song on Justice and Injustice” Ivan Franko traced out the expansion of the ideological and thematic range of the piece and pointed out its essential poetic potential. It has been emphasized that the author of the research put in effort to determine the genesis of the song (establishing its direct connection to the text dating back to the 14-15th c. “A Tale of Justice and Injustice”) and compose its “literary biography” (tracing the development of the popular theme “antagonism of justice and injustice” in European oral lore since the “Parable on Hercules at the Crossroads” dating back to the 5th century BC). The scholar reasonably referred to numerous fairy tales (mostly Ukrainian) where this motif dominated. While scrutinizing the corresponding folklore and literary texts of various nations, Franko accentuated the shared (template formulas, typical situations, traditional ideological imperatives) as well as distinguishing (“domestication” of migrant items, adjustment to national standards) features of the theme reception. The folklorist tackled the ample verbal treasure applying the findings of the cultural-historical school, such as the “retrogressive method” involving primary consideration of the most recent texts followed by gradual regression to older prototypes. Due to this method, Franko was able to prove the primeval Buddhist origin of the antagonism «justice-injustice» represented in fairy tales.
Sviatoslav PYLYPCHUK Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/938 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 SPACE OF WAR IN UKRAINIAN HISTORICAL DETECTIVE FICTION https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/939
The article examines the historical detective genre in contemporary Ukrainian literature, which has become one of the most popular on the book market and has formed stable reading communities. Historical detective stories are created by Vladyslav Ivchenko, Bohdan Kolomiychuk, Andriy Kokotyukha, Yuriy Vynnychuk, Vasyl Dobryansky, Iren Rozdobudko, Yuriy Datsenko, Olga Salipa, Natalka Snyadanko and others, mostly in the format of large “book series”, series of novels united by the depicted period, locations and serial characters. Contemporary writers depict the authentic atmosphere of the past, draw parallels with the present, seeking answers to essential questions related to the consolidation of the nation during the current russian-Ukrainian war, the problem of national identity. The events of the First World War and the National Liberation War of 1917–1921 often serve as material for historical detective fiction. This historical period is widely represented in World literature. In Bohdan Kolomiychuk's story “The Sky over Vienna”, his novel "300 Miles to the East", Andriy Kokotyuha’s novels “The Mistress from Rynok Square”, “The Exile and the Sinner”, Vasyl Dobryansky’s novel “The Chest for the Hetman”, the space of war is divided into front and rear, cities before or during russian occupation. The European map of the First World War serves as a vivid setting for the criminal plots of Ukrainian historical detective stories and enables the authors not only to deepen social, political, national, psychological conflicts, but also to raise important issues of Ukrainian identity, social justice, and the political future of Ukraine. Military landscapes are superimposed on detective investigations, stimulating the actions of detectives and adjusting their motivation: not only to expose criminals, but also to defend the interests of the Ukrainian community, to survive in a hostile imperial environment, to intervene in the geopolitical struggle. This leads to the blending of the genres of detective story, military narrative, and spy fiction in the works by Bohdan Kolomiychuk, Andriy Kokotyukha, and Vasyl Dobryansky.
Sofiya FILONENKO Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/939 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 THE LANGUAGE SITUATION DURING THE RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN WAR https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/940
This research presents and analyses the results of a small survey conducted by the author on social media and channels in the spring of 2023 to identify the peculiarities of the language situation in Ukraine after the full-scale invasion of the Russian occupiers. The motivation for the survey was the fact that during the year of full-scale war, the majority of Ukrainians, including Russian speakers, began to deliberately refuse to use the Russian language in all spheres of life, both in oral and written communication, in professional and everyday situations. This research aimed to confirm or refute the assumption that the attitude of Ukrainians (not only citizens of Ukraine) towards the state language and its perception as a national language has changed. The main research method used in this research was a survey conducted on the Google platform the link to which was distributed on Facebook, Instagram, and messengers to reach a wide audience of respondents. The questionnaire contained 12 questions, including 11 multiple-choice questions and 1 open-ended question. The analysis of the results shows significant changes in the attitude of Ukrainians towards the state language and its perception as a national language. While in earlier surveys (2017), the Ukrainian language was determined to have either equal or even less communicative power than Russian, the results of the 2023 survey revealed that the Ukrainian language has greater communicative power not only in professional communication but also in everyday communication, including regardless of the region of the country. Despite the duration of Russia's military aggression, which began openly in 2014, the attitude of Ukrainians toward the Ukrainian language began to change dramatically in 2022, with the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to the results of the study, the most striking differences compared to the 2017 survey were found in the use of Ukrainian not only as the state language in professional and official communication but also as a means of communication in everyday situations, which indicates an awareness of the role of Ukrainian as a national language and as a means of distancing oneself from Russian invaders.
Oksana PODVOISKA Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/940 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 MODIFICATION OF ARCHETYPE MOTHER IN MODERNISTIC PROSE OF О. KOBYLIANSKA, M. KOTSIUBYNSKY AND M. It argues that the works of Ukrainian prose writers such as O. Kobylianska, M. Kotsiubynsky, and M. Yatskiv evolved in connection with the period's latest pan-European aesthetic and philosophical intentions. It signified a shift in the worldview and artistic orientation paradigm that influenced the further development of the entire national culture. It was identified that the Ukrainian modernist movement, on the one hand, was based on the national cultural tradition, and on the other hand, promoted a rethinking of patriarchal values. It was also determined that the imaginative world of Ukrainian modernist artists meets both of the tendencies. This article specifically analyses the reinterpretation of the archetype Mother, a fundamental concept in Ukrainian mentality. Depiction of the image of a mother in the works of O. Kobylianska, M. Kotsiubynsky, and M. Yatskiv retains certain hereditary aspects of artistic tradition. The writer desires to delve into the realm of human psychology and discover the spiritual essence of individual character. The writers interpret the archetype Mother dichotomously: as the figure of a loving, patient, and forgiving mother, and its opposite – an evil stepmother or mother-in-law. It is observed that in the artistic world of Ukrainian modernists an exaggerated hyperbolization of the symbol of maternal sentiment embodied in the image of the suffering woman (mother, grandmother, aunt, uncle, or another female figure) is dominated. This figure symbolizes the mythologeme of sacrificial self-denial for the sake of children's future happiness, often hindering the development of their personalities. Therefore, the article highlights the attempts by writers from the turn of the century to recreate the harmful influence of possessive maternal instinct on the fate of children. It is based on the tendency to destroy patriarchal stereotypes and proclaim the idea of a free individual who rebels against family norms legitimised by traditions, has freedom of choice, and shapes their own destiny. The results of the article prove that Ukrainian prose writers have reinterpreted patriarchal notions of the sacred service of the mother, offering a contemporary interpretation of the aesthetic potential of the archetype Mother.
Oksana KUSHNIR, Tetiana RESHETUKHA, Oksana LABASHCHUK Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/941 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 THEORETICAL BASIS OF THE ANTHROPOLOGICAL APPROACH IN LITERARY STUDIES https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/942
The article deals with the theoretical foundations of literary anthropology and its significance for the analysis of literary texts. It is noted that literary anthropology arises as a result of an attempt to understand a person from anthropological, literary, philosophical, ethnographic, and cultural points of view; the methodological perspectives used by literary anthropology for a better understanding of literary texts derive precisely from “human studies” since the recognition of a person as a unique being who is capable of creating his world is the basis of anthropological theory. Based on the analysis of the works of Ukrainian and foreign researchers, literary anthropology is interpreted as one of the possible methodological perspectives or one of the possible options for interpreting artistic tests. In literary anthropology, two different argumentative directions are combined, since, on the one hand, more attention is paid to knowledge about man, and on the other hand, to the reflection of man in literature. Guided by the conviction that literary studies exists for literature, and not the other way around, it is more about proposals for interpretation than about the creation and defense of theoretical positions as an end in itself. It is noted that literature is doubly significant from an anthropological point of view: it depicts a person, examines him and aesthetically organizes, forms a person’s attitude to the world. To make sense of this in literary anthropology, what is needed is not so much a «method» in the strict sense of the word, as a combination of literary, scientific-historical, scientific-theoretical, as well as receptive and hermeneutic approaches. Anticipating an individual-human, humanistic view of literary texts, literary anthropology thereby sets a new prism for their research. Recognition of the primary role of a person in an artistic text is an impulse not only for a quantitative reassessment of values but also for a rethinking of the phenomenon of the person himself. Through the anthropological principle, literary science tries to explain man and the surrounding world, to understand man as a creator of culture and history, and the role of literature is to give man «different» knowledge about himself, to be a commentary on his cultural and historical development.
Svitlana BARTISH, Halyna DERKACH Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/942 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 COMMUNICATIVE PARAMETERS OF FOOTBALL REPORTING https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/943
The article states that the mass media represent and generalize the achievements of athletes, teams, and individual sports fields. Almost all possible genres belong to sports journalism, including reporting. The dominant communicative parameters of the football reporting were analyzed: meaningfulness, logic, correctness, accuracy, purity, diversity, expressiveness, which contribute to the quality of the text of the football reporting, ensure the persuasiveness of the material, and activate the attention of the addressee. The sports portal «Football» (https://football.ua) and website «Social. Sport» (https://suspilne.media/sport/). From the point of view of content, the representativeness of the headlines of football reports, the division of the material into content blocks is considered. The inseparable connection of content with factuality as a textual categorical unit is emphasized. Since logic is projected onto the structure of the text, the specifics of the main part of the reporting and its conclusion are covered in more detail. A list of typical violations of the correctness of the Ukrainian language (tautology, tracings, lack of alternation of prepositions, incorrect endings of nouns in various forms, lack of necessary punctuation marks, etc.) and purity of language (excess of foreignisms, in particular anglicisms) is given. Linguistic means that contribute to the observance of language accuracy (a system of football terms), language diversity (different language means to express the same content), language expressiveness (forms of degrees of comparison of qualitative adjectives, figurative means – epithet constructions; comparisons, determined terms with transformed semantics, exclamatory sentences, amplification, parcellation). Being universal fenomenon, the oral narrative has become the object of research in a number of social and humanitarian disciplines such as history, psychology, linguistics, folkloristics, etc. Moreover each of these disciplines has already developed or it is forming its own methodological base for the narrative text studying which reveals not only the individual experience of a person, but, what is more, it reproduces the collective experience in which the general cultural and communicative intentions of the narrator were synthesized. The aim of this article is to anylise the peculiarities of the narrative as the important thing for solving a wide range of problematic issues and to establish the essence of its definition. The universality of the story itself or the narrative is defined in this work. The author outlines and confirms his summarising based on the studies of famous Ukrainian and foreign scholars who conduct their investigations eithor in the field of philology or the reseaches of other scientific disciplines. The interdisciplinary nature of narratology and the object of its research – narrative – is confirmed by philosophical science according to which narratives are considered as human experience organizing mechanisms. They are local due to the historical ways of their reception as they are characterized by social instrumentality and pragmatic potential. The research shows that as a means of psychoanalytic therapy, oral narratives can be treated as a part for studying communicatively important individual cases of a person’s life with further constructing typical mental structure models. The linguistic potential is highlighted as the important thing in the narrative studies. The results show that from a linguistic perspective the linguistic abilities are considered as a way of representing past experience and are equivalents to individual speech acts. In the same way, oral history and folklore studies find their expression, but it should be emphasized that the object of their research – stories about experiences – are interpreted from different perspectives: for historians it is important to find out information about certain events of the past with the help of sources, and folklorists , working in the field of cultural anthropology, trace the manifestations of worldview and certain types of cultures. Furthermore, oral story and folklore study are represented in the same way of their expression. It should be emphasized that the object of their researches – stories about life experiences – are interpreted from different perspectives. Historians focus on finding out the information about certain events of the past based on the factual knowledge. Considerable attention is focused on the characteristics of the genre variety of small epic forms of Volodymyr Gzhitskyi, the disclosure of the concept of the author’s personality and its embodiment in the artistic work of the artist. It has been proven that the synthesis of various gender-genre features causes the emergence of new genre varieties of short prose in the writer’s work. The work of Volodymyr Gzhitskyi is considered in the aspect of genre dynamics based on the identification of the tendencies of the lyricization of the statement, as well as the nature of its functioning in the writer’s short prose. It is pointed out that the characteristic genre peculiarity of Volodymyr Gzhitskyi’s prose of the early period is its transformed variety of small epic form - novella and short stories, in which the artist combined their genre features, filling the new genre model with insightful pictorial details, leitmotifs, nuances in the reproduction of the characters’ experiences and moods . It is noted that a significant place in the artist’s work is given to the genre of laconic, sketch-etude short story, built on emotional expression. At the same time, the story is lyricized, which is led by a homodiegetic narrator, sometimes a lyrical subject, a character-witness. That is why the plots of the writer’s prose works are characterized by a dynamic action, an unexpected resolution, and a complicated composition. The scientific article outlines V. The article interprets that the historical detective story is a literary genre in which events, characters and plot unfold in a historical context. The scientific works of Ukrainian and foreign researchers on the formation and development of the historical detective as a literary genre are described and analyzed. Based on this, it is revealed that it combines research and study of events of past eras with complex detective stories. The analysis of interaction of history and detective literature is carried out. It considers how this genre introduces historical facts into the artistic text and interacts with modernity. It is established that the historical detective turns out to be not only an interesting literary genre, but also an important source for the study of the cultural, historical and social context of the era in which it unfolds. Attention is drawn to the possibility of “historization” of detective literature. It is shown that the detective is a tool that helps the author to comprehend the state of society through the disclosure of a crime. It is characterized that the historical detective story always contains an element of passeism and is prone to escapism. It is noted that studies include the analysis of structural elements of the historical detective, such as the plot, characters (detective, society), atmosphere, historical or pseudo-historical materials (diaries, letters, newspaper notes) and the identification of approaches to the definition of this genre. It is demonstrated that historical detectives mainly distinguish two periods: Soviet and pre-war. It is noted that the historical detective is not a simple combination of “detective” and “history”, as events are described clearly and correctly. The role of development of cultural and educational potential of readers in the process of reading historical detectives is characterized. The expediency and prospects of acquaintance of the young generation with the genre of historical detective were emphasized, which will contribute to the active study of the past and the development of their historical consciousness. The influence of the detective on the perception of the past in modern society is outlined and new prospects for research in this direction are determined.
Olha SOBCHUK Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/946 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 GENRE PECULIARITY OF ZACHARIAS KOPISTENSKY’S TREATISES https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/947
The article characterizes the most important structural and functional features of Zacharias Kopystensky’s treatises “The Book of the One Faith” (1619–1621) and “Palinodia, or the Book of Defense” (1621) and identifies their problematic and thematic priorities. It is emphasized that their appearance was influenced by both the historical and political circumstances in Ukraine and the desire for emotionality, cultivation of the ability to influence the recipient’s feelings, which is characteristic of the Ukrainian Baroque era, which manifests itself in a paradoxical combination of the incongruous. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study is formed by the works of domestic literary critics, cultural critics and historians, which allow us to evaluate the treatises of Zakharia Kopystensky in different contexts, – K. Borysenko, I. Isichenko, Y. Larin, O. Matushek, N. Poplavska, E. Pshenychnyi, R. Radyshevskyi, P. Stepenkina, L. Ushkalov, I. Franko, V. Tsyhanenko. The baroque textual techniques used in the treatises are highlighted, and their connection with apologetics is traced. It is proved that the treatise “The Book of the One Faith” covers issues of dogma, sacraments and rituals, as well as the social practice of members of the Christian church. Its central idea is the dispute over the primary dogmas. It is unique in terms of its genre specificity, as it combines a systematic presentation of Orthodox doctrine. The motif of unity of faith is fundamental to the entire treatise. It is found that the main content of the treatise “Palinodia, or the Book of Defense” is a refutation of the Catholic authors’ claims about the supreme power of the Pope over the Orthodox Church. Since the work is directed against the book “Defense of Church Unity” by Lev Krevza, the Uniate archimandrite of Vilna, Zacharias Kopystensky adhered to the principle of building this work when creating “Palinodia”, that is, it also consists of four sections, preceded by a traditional Preface for the time. It is stated that the treatises of Zacharias Kopystensky are structurally complex texts (with allusions, reminiscences), the multilayered nature of which requires reading all narratives.
Olha FEDKO Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/947 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 A LINGUISTIC-COGNITIVE MODELLING OF ARTISTIC DISCOURSE IN TERMS OF FRAME SEMANTICS (CASE STUDY OF UKRAINIAN RETRANSLATIONS OF W. SHAKESPEARE’S TRAGEDIES) https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/948
The article substantiates a method of linguistic-cognitive modelling of artistic discourse in terms of frame semantics as an effective method of establishing the degree of cognitive proximity of the original and translation texts on the example of Ukrainian retranslations of W. Shakespeare’s tragedies. Linguistic-cognitive modelling in translation studies contributes to the further development of the linguistic-cognitive approach in the theory and practice of modelling mental structures, providing a deeper understanding of the nature of human thinking and speech. The methods of cognitive translatology in the process are aimed at researching the interaction of language and cognitive processes to obtain high-quality information about how language reflects cognitive processes and interacts with the formation of mental structures of the author’s and the translator’s mentality. The application of conceptual analysis involves the comparative method and methods of concept identification, frame modelling and frame mapping, the use of which presupposes the use of all the experience of the researcher-interpreter (sensory, physical, historical, and social), acquired in the process of mastering the surrounding world, which gives the researcher-interpreter the opportunity to reveal deep meanings encoded by the author in the original work and the translator in its retranslation. The comparative method becomes effective in the course of contrasting the units of the original text and its Ukrainian retranslations. The method of concept identification makes it possible to name the concepts verbalized in the compared text fragments and to reveal their conceptual content through frame modelling. The method of frame mapping establishes the degree of cognitive proximity between the verbalized concepts of the original and the retranslation by comparing the slots of the frames of the verbalized concepts identified in the text of the original work and its Ukrainian retranslations.
Yana BOIKO Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/948 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 PRAYER INVOCATIONS IN THE STRUCTURE OF ANCIENT DRAMA: THE COMMUNICATIVE ASPECT https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/949
Euripides’ work, his dramatic diptych “Iphigenia in Aulis” and “Iphigenia in Tauris”, in particular, which is based on a well-known mythological plot, continues to be of interest to modern researchers of literature. The question of the structure and semantics of the genre of Euripides’ works, their research in the communicative aspect would make it possible to clarify the phenomenon of the perception of ancient drama in subsequent eras. Let us recall that the difference between Euripides and his predecessors was in the reinterpretation of the myth in his own, different from the generally accepted assessment of divine intervention in human life. That is why, perhaps, in the tragedies considered it is not always possible to find solemn praise songs in honor of the gods (hymns), the origins of which come from an archaic prayer, and which were quite popular in any genre of ancient literature. Nevertheless, theological names and prayer invocations are often found in the works of Euripides. We tried to analyze the main functions of Euripides’ prayer appeals to the gods (invocations) in the communicative aspect. It can be concluded that prayer invocations, which constitute the lyrical component of ancient drama (along with its dramatic and epic component), perform a number of communicative functions, characteristic of a speech act, in different degrees of their use. The texts of prayer songs (as well as lyric poetry, in general) are often spectacular, conditioned by their heightened emotionality. They are dominated by an expressive function that contributes to the creation of a general emotional atmosphere for the author, actor and recipient. Reporting (referential) principles are less expressed in prayer appeals, their role is exclusively informative. The combination of the referencial function with the expressive and phatic function, which is necessary for establishing communicative relations with the viewer (or reader), creates favorable conditions for the reception of the ancient plot. Some rethinking of the artistic and communicative load of prayer invocations can be observed in the dramas of the Ukrainian diaspora (Lesia Ukrainka, Liudmyla Starytska-Cherniakhivska). Mythological theonyms, the appeal to the gods in their texts turn into a mythological symbol, their main function is to mythologize modern events as much as possible. The lyrical component enriches the dramatic form with psychological factors, serves to reveal the internal conflict in the drama, and contributes to the expansion of the reader’s reception.
Svitlana VYNAR Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/949 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 LINGUISTIC PARAMETERS OF THE FUNCTIONING OF THE AMERICAN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND THEIR IMPLEMENTATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/950
The article determines that sociocultural stereotypes in American English determine the nature of the connotations of linguistic meanings, create a complex semantic aura of a linguistic sign. They are undoubtedly connected with the inner form of the word, with the motivation of its meaning. It is shown that the internal form of a word in American English is lost if the semantic connection ceases to be understood by native speakers. In the cognitive-semiological description, sociocultural stereotypes are correlated with the concept of a prototype. For the cognitive-semiological paradigm of linguculturalology in American English, this concept is valuable because it helps to understand the processes of categorization, and to a large extent depends not only on the actual cognitive mechanisms, but also on the cultural and discursive space in which a person is located. Metonymic thinking in American English allows you to recognize the entire category as a whole by the prototype. For each category, it is possible to formulate a set of characteristic features that are embodied as fully as possible in the prototype. For phraseological units of the American English language, we can talk about such signs as: 1) business, household; 2) functions; 3) has a functioning mechanism (appropriate methods and tools); 4) has human resources; 5) has the territory of the state; 6) affects the development of the USA and the world, brings profit; 7) resources are formed at the expense of founders' contributions, external investments, state funding; 8) ensures creation and distribution of GDP; 9) function in everyday and market environment. Linguistic and cultural problems of the American phraseology of the English language are addressed to the solution of several issues. The first question concerns the technical side, which consists in clarifying the terminological apparatus of the study. The second refers to the substantive part, which concerns the essence of terminological concepts. The cultural specificity of the American phraseological units of the English language involves the correspondence of the linguistic unit to the element of mentality or spiritual culture of the society, its history, beliefs, traditions and natural conditions of life. The national specificity of the phrase «ethnic» is due to belonging to a certain ethnic group. SHEVCHUK) https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/951
The article is devoted to the analysis of the peculiarities of using syncretic conjunctions in a simple complicated sentence on the basis of works by V. Shevchuk. The specificity of functioning of connective means is studied by means of a file of examples compiled on the basis of the literary texts “Three Leaves Outside the Window”, “The House on the Mountain”, “In the Field of Humility”, “The Eye of the Abyss”, “The Ghost of a Dead House”. The study of the selected groups of subordinating conjunctions was carried out according to the qualification of K. G. Gorodenska. The analyzed types of syncretic connecting means include disjunctive-explanatory, disjunctive-concessive, partitive-concessive, conjunctions of comparison and correspondence. The specifics of the manifestation of formal grammatical relations and semantic and syntactic relations in a simple sentence by the conjunctions are determined. In the V. Shevchuk’s novels, the conjunctions of conjunction-subordination demonstrate different productivity of functioning: explanatory-equating conjunctions are more often used in simple complex sentences, while disjunctive-partitive and partitive-concessive conjunctions are used in complex ones. The conjunctions of comparison and correspondence are not recorded in the material under examination. Within the predicative part of composite sentences or a simple complex sentence explanatory-equating conjunctions emphasize the meaning of a simple verbal or compound nominal predicate. The typical case of using these conjunctions is to separate secondary members of a sentence, in particular, attribute (аpposition), аdverbial мodifier. Within the predicative part of a composite sentence, the conjunction most often connects homogeneous predicates. The active functioning of subordinate-coordinate conjunctions in a simple sentence is confirmed by examples from literary works. Out of the body of illustrative material, only 25 % of the conjunctions express syncretic semantic-syntactic relations. The most frequently used are the explanatory-equating ones тобто – 43%, чи – 11%, або – 13%, the disjunctive-concessive ones але – 13%, проте – 4,2%, the partitive-concessive ones чи…чи – 9,2%. The main research method employed is a comparative one, allowing for the examination of the correlation of individual elements between the original text and the translation. This correlation is influenced by both the relationships between the languages involved in the translation and extralinguistic factors affecting the translation process. Descriptive, contextual, and approximative-statistical research methods are also used in the article. It is determined that the author of the novel tends towards deep psychological insight and meticulously depicts objects of the material world. This occurs at the intersection of cultures and national identities, influencing the style of the work. The translation, on the other hand, stands out for the selection of non-standard variants, considering the norms of literary Ukrainian language. The article deals with non-equivalent vocabulary and explores how the translator coped with the difficulties of its reproduction. Examples of outdated vocabulary are provided, conveying the feeling of the depicted era. The fundamental principles to be followed when reproducing Ukrainian temporospatial vocabulary are identified, emphasizing the meaning of words over different time periods. Examples of the translation of epithets using witty equivalents in Ukrainian, close to the native speaker, are presented. Metaphors are conveyed through precise translation, substitution, compensation, and paraphrase. The last part delves into the themes, individual style, and atmosphere of the original and translated texts. The author particularly describes rural realities, and the translator’s task is to preserve the writer’s narrative style to the extent that it does not distort the reader’s proper perception. Therefore, the article considers linguistic and terminological aspects and highlights the difficulties that arise during translation. The relevance of the proposed study determines the rapid development of the scientific and technical sphere, which causes the appearance of new technical devices, as well as operation manual texts for them. It was found that the technical operation manual texts as a kind of professional texts are thematically, stylistically and semantically organized, logically structured and complete unity, characterized by the wide use of special terminological vocabulary and the complexity of the grammatical and syntactic structure. The article investigates the genre and stylistic features of the reproduction of scientific and technical texts using the example of the operation manual text for the Miele CVA 6401 coffee machine. The difference between foreign and domestic scientific and technical texts is in stylistic features at the level of syntax and vocabulary, which should be adapted during translation. For this, translation transformations are used. The article focuses on the need to take into account the speech context and choose appropriate equivalents to ensure maximum intelligibility and accuracy of the translation. Recognizing the significance of developing an interpretive mechanism for analyzing editorial practices in translation, which also includes compliance with professional standards, ethical considerations, and the integrity of the original work, the paper proposes a three-level model for the conceptual analysis of editorial practices in translation. At the micro-level, we propose conducting a functional-structural analysis that encompasses lexical, semantic, stylistic, and pragmatic aspects of the translated text. This level of analysis reveals how the text positions itself through specific examples of target language usage, showcasing linguistic trends or editorial practices. At the meso-level, attention is focused on the interpersonal dimension, specifically on the editorial assessment of the translator's attitude toward authorial intentions and the manner in which they are actualized and specified. The macro-level involves the analysis of the actualized discourse, encompassing examples of shifts, manipulations, and tendentious rewriting in the translation. Editorial studies of translation are particularly important for investigating the representation of Ukrainian literature internationally, notably in the English-speaking world. The history of Ukrainian-English translation reveals that editors, acting as curators of translation publications, conceptually structured the material and engaged actively with translators. The article also aims to reveal the linguistic features of positioning the subjects of discourse in the situation of risk and to formulate the principles of ecological representation of potentially traumatic information in the English-language media discourse. The focus has been placed on the issues that affect people’s ability to resist negative effects of media. The research is grounded in an integrated approach, which involves contextual analysis of English media discourse and considers both generation and reception contexts. It also highlights a psychological perspective, exploring its impact on individual consciousness, studying the mechanisms of discourse generation and perception, and emphasizing its individual and personalized aspects. The article examines diverse communicative goals in the context of media psychology, particularly highlighting how media influences our understanding and actions during crises or traumatic events. The communicative intentions could perform different functions through language. For instance, informative intention seeks to educate, while expressive intention evokes emotional responses. Persuasive intention aims to sway beliefs or behaviors, directive intention guides or instructs, and performative intention fosters a change through speech. The authors emphasize the crucial role of grasping these communicative intentions in order to prove ethical media discourse. The further in-depth interdisciplinary research on the interactions between media discourse and people’s psychology is suggested to foster better understanding and and the ability to manage media impact on society.
Olga ISHCHENKO, Olga VERHOVTSOVA Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/956 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 EUPHEMISTIC NOMINATIONS OF MEDICAL REALM AS A MEANS OF CONTEXTUAL SYNONYMY IN MODERN NEWSPAPER DISCOURSE https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/957
It has been noticed the apprehensible shifts within the underlying pandemic conditions, in dissemanting information by the mass media in the English-speaking linguistic culture. Mass media has been transformed into one of the main sources of information. The socio-political environment imposes media to implement new means of communication for information transmission. The proposed article is aimed at solving the problem of euphemistic nominations of medical topics based on the material of newspaper discourse within the cognitive-discursive paradigm. The expediency of considering the phenomenon of euphemism in line with the cognitive-discourse paradigm based on the contextual semantics of lexical units has been substantiated. The conceptual and terminological apparatus of the study is considered. The factual material of medical euphemisms is analyzed. Euphemistic nominations with a contextual-synonymous dominant, the method of their creation and thematic groups have been singled out. It has been found that euphemisms and dysphemisms are mediators of the category of contextual synonymy, actualizing emergent-metaphorical concepts on the material of medical realm. The following thematic groups of euphemistic nominations are singled out: human mental state, disease, male reproductive system, human actions, professions, food, and human physiological state. Metaphor, generalization, meiosis and antonomasia are the basis of euphemistic nominations with contextually synonymous dominance. The quantitatively predominant metaphorical type of formation of euphemistic nominations testifies to associative connections between cognitive thinking and semiotic reproduction. Euphemistic nominations as a manifestation of contextual synonymy serve to express and specify speech in mass-quality articles on medical topics. Contextual-synonymous units, having a huge pragmatic potential, become one of the main linguistic means of conveying denotative and connotative information.
Iryna KAZYMIR Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/957 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 TRANSLATIONAL DOMAIN-BASED TERMINOGRAPHY OF UKRAINE (BASED ON THE MATERIALS OF BILINGUAL PUBLICATIONS OF THE 21ST CENTURY) https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/958
The Ukrainian literary language dates back to ancient times by its origins and constitutes the cultural heritage of the nation, acts as an important factor in the unity of the national language space, and plays the role of a link that connects generations to each other. The intellectual property of humanity is collected and preserved by dictionaries, which, reflecting the lexical system of the language, at the same time record the advanced thought of the era and the level of development of the literary language, the traditions of its flourishing in the historical process. One of the determining conditions for qualitative acquirement of the fundamentals of any science is the mastering of special terminology. Nowadays, scientists emphasize the importance of term dictionaries, as without them neither the development of various fields of knowledge, nor modern international communication in various scientific fields is possible. The attempt to analyze the terminography in the projection to modern date was made in the manuscript. The experience of compiling of the bilingual field-based dictionaries of the XXI century was analyzed, and the principles of their construction were determined. The main attention was focused on the scientific value of the works that is driven by the needs of modern Ukrainian terminography. Dictionaries of legal terminology and comparative jurisprudence (“French-Ukrainian dictionary of legal terms”, “German-Ukrainian dictionary of legal terms”, “French-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-French legal dictionary”), economic terminology (“New large German-Ukrainian economic dictionary”, “Economic Dictionary (German-Ukrainian)”, “Interpretive English-Ukrainian Dictionary of Economic Terms with Elements of Theory and Issues”, “English-Ukrainian Dictionary of Modern Banking Terminology”, “English-Ukrainian Business Dictionary”, “Great Polish-Ukrainian, Ukrainian-Polish dictionary of modern business terminology”), technological terminology (“Ukrainian-English dictionary of terms of technological systems of repair production”, “English-Ukrainian dictionary of welding terminology”, “Nanotechnology. Ukrainian-English dictionary-handbook of conceptual concepts”), etc. were characterized. Ukrainian terminography is developing rapidly. A large number of multi-disciplinary terms glossaries are published every year, scientists improve the methodology of processing and fixing terms in lexicographic works, develop new fields of knowledge, hold annual international scientific conferences.
Іvanna FETSKO Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/958 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 THE CORRELATION BETWEEN TRANSLATION AND THE FORMATION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE CONTEX OF GLOBAL COMMUNICATION https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/959
This article explores the features of shaping national identity in the realm of global communication. The relationship between culture and its reflection in the process of translation is being investigated. Translation is recognized an crucial tools for intercultural communication with several key aspects: 1) expanding understanding: translation enables broadening understanding among people who speak different languages; 2) preserving cultures: translation aids in preserving and conveying cultural nuances, traditions and values across languages, ensuring the uniqueness of each culture; 3) promoting collaboration: in business and scientific realms, translation enhances collaboration between different countries and cultures, opening new opportunities for innovation and knowledge exchange; 4) reducing new barriers: translation contributes to the reduction of language barriers, simplifying communication with these who speak different languages. Explored intercultural opportunities of various languages and the influence of cultures on translation. Also, the article examines translation as a complex phenomenon, highlighting its social, psycholinguistic, psychological and cultural aspects. Today, translation holds the status of a distinct science with a well-defined subject, research object and, accordingly, its terminological system. It stands as a serious scientific discipline capable of explaining and describing the fundamental principles of translation activity. Translation facilitates indirect communication between people from different cultural background, with the translator acting as a cultural intermediary. Performing important social functions, translation as a type of speech activity should be considered in the totality of all its functions, its social nature and realize the needs of people in communication. Translation reveals such aspects as the reproduction of cultural nuances and the accuracy of conveying an idea. Incorrect translation can cause misunderstandings, limiting the exchange of ideas and knowledge between cultures. The use of language elements that reflect unique aspects of culture contributes to the preservation and dissemination of national values. Correct translation of terms and expressions preserves cultural concepts. In addition, understanding the context and taking into account cultural realities contributes to a successful exchange.
Liudmyla POLISHCHUK, Tetiana PUSHKAR Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/959 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 LINGUOCULTURAL CONCEPTS IN THE MODERN TOURIST ONLINE-MAGAZINES https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/960
The article deals with common linguocultural hyperconcepts and relevant nationally-specific concepts of Ukrainian, English and French tourist discours, which are included in their semantic field. This study was carried out using elements of descriptive and conceptual analyses, as well as taking into account the peculiarities of certain linguoculture and specific context, communicative situation and historical basis (prehistrory). The translation technique has been applied to illustrate the difference between the way of expression and that of perception in different linguocultures. The most frequently occurring hyperconcepts (“tourism”, “happiness”, “beauty”, “hospitality”, “nature”) embrace the following concepts: “tourism” – “trip”, “rest”, “consumption”, “quality of tourism”, “road”, “adventure”; “happiness” – “positive emotions”, “entertainment”, “benefit”; “beauty” – “tourist attractiveness”. The analysis of the selected corpus of examples showed the existance of a significant number of common concepts in the touristic discourse, but their functioning is modified by national realities. Thus, we distinguished the following concepts with the relevant thematic hyperconcepts refer to the national identity hyperconcepts: “Ukrainianness”, “Frenchness” or “Englishness”: “hospitality” – “accommodation”, “food”, “societу”, “national cuisine” (in particular, “gourmandism”, “wine”, “wine-making”); “culture” – “landmarks”, “historicity”; “nature” – “weather”, “forest”, “village”, “countryside” and other. In Ukrainian linguoculture prevail such concepts as “hospitality”, “culture”, “adventure”, “society”, “nature”, “road”. In French and English ones prevail “consumption”, “benefit”, “unicity”, “historicity”, “privacy”, “village”, “countryside”. In each culture there are ethnospecific lacuna expressing the particular features of a certain nation and they are usually rendered by means of transliteration (like names of dishes or landmarks). In such way, tourist online magazines are the source of significant amount of cultural background information of concepts and perform not only entertaining but also developing and cultural-educative function.
Mariana STRYZHNOVA, Olga PONOMARENKO, Valentyna KOVALCHUK Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/960 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 SEMANTIC FEATURES OF ANTITHESIS IN ENGLISH AND UKRAINIAN INSCRIPTIONS ON CLOTHING https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/961
The article is devoted to the study of the features of antithesis in English and Ukrainian inscriptions on clothing. Popular online stores and auction sites were chosen as the source of empirical material selection due to their publicity, accessibility and wide coverage of the target audience: young people who are representatives of the modern language community, and with the help of text prints reflect topical aspirations and moods. The empirical corpus of the study consists of 1328 English and 808 Ukrainian inscriptions on clothing, selected by the continuous sampling method, which are characterized by the use of figures and tropes. The article discusses the latest trends in the study of antithesis in linguistics. It is emphasized that in modern philology, antithesis is interpreted as one of the main tropes, which is based on the antonymy of concepts or images. It was found that with the help of clothing inscriptions, the ideas, aspirations and preferences of the owners of such garments are presented. The analysis of the semantics of opposites in textual prints allows us to identify relevant topics, categories and ideas that are figuratively reinterpreted, compared or contrasted by speakers of English and Ukrainian cultures. It was found that the frequency of using the antithesis is practically the same for inscriptions on clothing in English and Ukrainian. As a result of the study, two thematic groups were distinguished: Man and Phenomena and processes of reality, which differ in productivity in the studied language communities. Within the framework of each group, a number of antonym pairs are distinguished that are isomorphic for English and Ukrainian texts on clothing. It is noted that the study demonstrates the presence of oppositions that are typical only for wearers of clothing of a certain language community. The allomorphic features of the antithesis in the text prints allow us to make certain social generalizations.
Natalia STRIUK, Olesia BOIVAN Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/961 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 BOTANICAL CODE IN FICTION: SYMBOLISM AND TRANSLATION https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/962
The article presents the analysis of the use of the botanical code as a literary element in the works of English and Ukrainian authors and the study of the peculiarities of expressing the poetic and symbolic characteristics of the botanical code in translation. The botanical code is a special linguistic, cultural and symbolic system that is used in works of fiction to express a special poetic thinking. Given the complexity of the topic, the study requires an integrated approach that uses theories and methods of literary criticism, stylistics, narratology, and translation studies. Metaphors and figurative language are not just a textual design for the more eloquent expression of the content, but deeply reflect the internal organization of artistic discourse, in particular, while actualizing of conceptual metaphors as special cognitive structures. In general, the application of the theory of cognitive metaphor allows us to recreate two stable metaphors related to botany: HUMAN BEING is A FLOWER; THE WORLD OF HUMANS is A GARDEN. The paper analyzes the symbolism of the English garden as such, as well as a number of individual floronyms – roses, lilies, wisteria, aconite, etc. A comparative analysis of the interpretations of several flowers in the Ukrainian and English cultural and literary context is carried out. The history of the development of florography is mentioned. Examples of successful and unsuccessful attempts to translate botanical names, including the transposition of botanical cultural codes in translations of literary works, are given, because the translator faces quite a challenge – to carry out a literary analysis of the botanical symbol in the original and to find a counterpart that will preserve not only the pragmatics of the text, but also its aesthetic characteristics without disturbing the natural logic of the surrounding world. We come to the conclusion that a symbol in fiction is not only a linguistic, but also an extralinguistic phenomenon, and its interpretation requires deep knowledge of the cultural context, social psychology, mythology, and history of a certain people.
Natalia IVANYTSKA, Liliia TERESHCHENKO Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/962 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300 THE USE OF STYLISTIC DEVICES IN THE SONG LYRICS OF THE AMERICAN RAPPER EMINEM https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/963
The article analyzes the use of stylistic tropes in the song rap lyrics of the famous American rapper, music producer and actor Eminem. The article demonstrates the linguistic study results of the frequency for using tropes in the song lyrics of rap songs that embody the hip-hop subculture style, using the example of two studio albums by a popular contemporary author and performer of rap songs, winner of the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Rap album Eminem. The hypothesis for scientific research was the assumption that in the author’s song lyrics of the rap genre Eminem there are some stylistic devices like tropes that are often used by rappers, such as: metaphor, allegory, comparison, hyperbole, irony, oxymoron, litotes, personification, etc., and therefore, the purpose of the study was to find out the correctness of such an assumption and to identify the presence or absence of certain tropes in the texts of Eminem’s work. The article contains lines of lyrics from the two studio albums of the author of rap lyrics Eminem, which were first presented in 2017 (“Revival”) and 2018 (“Kamikaze”). The conducted research proved that such stylistic techniques as tropes, namely metaphor, allegory, comparison, hyperbole, irony, oxymoron, litotes, personification, etc., are widely used by the authors of song lyrics of the rap genre, which is clearly visible from the song lyrics analysis of modern studio albums of the popular rapper Eminem. It should be noted that the study was conducted exclusively on the example of one performer’s creativity and the author of the rap genre song lyrics, and therefore, it can be logically assumed that the use of stylistic tropes is characteristic of this rapper’s creativity. Therefore, the linguistic study upon the presence of the phenomenon of stylistic devices tropes in the rap genre song lyrics as a whole requires further study on the example of rap song lyrics by other popular rappers. However, after the conducted research, it can be stated that the use of tropes is at least possible in the song lyrics of the rap genre.
Ihor RIAZANOV Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.tnpu.ternopil.ua/index.php/sm/article/view/963 Tue, 09 Apr 2024 00:00:00 +0300
