Abstract

The Lemko song is a unique cultural phenomenon that harmoniously combines the national identity and musical and poetic tradition of the Ukrainian people. It serves as a key tool for preserving ethnic identity and reflects the historical experience and worldview of Lemkos, a sub-ethnic group whose existence was closely linked to the geographical features of the mountainous regions. These songs, distinguished by their original melodies and complex rhythmic structures, are an important part of Ukrainian and European heritage. They represent a rich genre spectrum: from ritual and lyrical to humorous, social and historical compositions. Their characteristic features are major-minor variations, emotional depth and melodic expressiveness, reflecting the connection with the natural environment, family traditions and love for the native land. Despite its difficult historical fate, including forced migration and assimilation pressure, Lemko song has preserved its authenticity thanks to the efforts of folk performers and researchers. It remains an important tool of ethno-cultural self-identification. The choral art based on this heritage is actively developing, enriching the musical culture and promoting the Lemko song tradition in Ukraine and abroad. The scientific interest in Lemko music culture is due to its integrative role between different cultural traditions. This song is an important source for the study of ethnic culture, in particular its melodic and poetic features, and demonstrates the ability of music to unite people even in the face of cultural transformations. Lemko melodies are also an inspiring example of the adaptability and resilience of traditions in the face of globalisation challenges. Thus, Lemko song is not only an object of musicological research, but also an important element of cultural dialogue that combines tradition and modernity, ethnic identity and intercultural communication.
