DISLOCATION AND MOVEMENT OF UNITS OF THE RUSSIAN OCCUPATION ARMY IN TERNOPIL DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR (1916–1917)

Abstract

The aim of this article is to examine the characteristics of the dislocation and movement of units of the Russian occupation army within the territory of Ternopil in 1916–1917, to identify the factors that determined their deployment and mobility, and to assess the impact of the military presence on the local population and the socio-economic situation of the city under the conditions of the First World War. Research Methodology. The study employs a combination of methods that allows for a comprehensive analysis of the dislocation and movement of Russian occupation units in Ternopil in 1916–1917. Primarily, a historical-archival approach was applied, involving the examination of military reports, orders, dislocation maps, and related documents. Chronological and comparative analyses were used to establish the sequence of events and clarify movement routes, enabling cross-referencing of data from various sources and assessment of their reliability. Strategic and logistical factors influencing troop deployment were identified. A systems approach was applied, considering the dislocation and movement of troops as part of a military-organizational system interacting with political, social, and economic processes in the occupied region. Scientific Novelty. For the first time, the article analyzes the processes of dislocation and movement of Russian occupation army units in Ternopil during 1916–1917. Movement routes have been systematized, and the relationship between strategic command decisions and the socio-economic conditions of the city has been established. The study broadens the understanding of the impact of the occupation regime on the everyday life of Ternopil’s population and contributes new data to the study of local history of the First World War in the Western Ukrainian region. Conclusions. The study identifies the characteristics of dislocation and movement of Russian occupation army units in Ternopil during 1916–1917. It has been established that the deployment of Russian occupation forces was determined by strategic and logistical factors, the availability of infrastructure, transportation routes, and the accessibility of territories for garrison placement. The results enhance the understanding of the local history of the First World War and provide a basis for further research on military organization and occupation practices in the Western Ukrainian region.
