ORAL HISTORY: CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS

This article explores preconditions of formation, the main stages of development and the process of institutionalization of oral history as a research area; the characteristic features of each period are indicated. In such a context the author offers a brief overview of core discussions on research subject, theory and practice of oral historical research, which ultimately determined modern methodological principles, approaches, and key concepts of the oral history worldwide. The author points out to the suitability and complications of using oral history in studies of totalitarian past; prospects of further development of this research trend in Ukraine are outlined.
