THE ROLE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN THE OUTBREAK OF THE CRIMEAN WAR IN THE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE HISTORIOGRAPHY (XX – EARLY XXI CENTURY)

The article analyzes the heritage of the British and American historiography, dedicated to the Crimean war of 1853–1856. The attention is given to ascertainment of the scholarly vision of the role of Nicholas I’s foreign policy in the outbreak of the military conflict in Europe. The author comes to the conclusion about the existence of the two historiographical approaches to the definition of the nature of the fault of the Russian Empire. One trend focuses on an aggressive course aimed at a military solution of the Eastern question, while another one supports the idea of miscalculation of the tsarist diplomacy.There are different variations of representation of the Western great powers’ fault in starting of the war in both narrative models.
