RELIGIOUS REFORM OF AMENHOTEP IV AS A CONSEQUENCE OF STRENGTHENING THE POSITION OF THE THEBAN PRIESTHOOD

The article reviews main reasons for the religious reform of Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten) as a consequence of strengthening of the Theban priesthood’s influence on the royal power. The main attention is paid to the role of the cult of Amun in the political and religious program of the Egyptian pharaohs during the Middle and New Kingdoms. Tha author analyzed the origins of the cult of Aten as the main god of the new state religios cult during Amarna period. It is determined that Akhenaten’s reform was a consequence of the policy of the Egyptian pharaohs aimed to supporting the cult of Amun.
