Abstract

The article analyzes the poem by N.A. Nekrasov “To whom in Russia live well”, its first chapters – “Pop”. In the course of the analysis, the authors compare the canonical text of the chapter “Pop” with draft manuscripts, notes, additions to show how radically changed the point of view of Nekrasov on the depicted character. The work shows that the basis of the first version of the image of the priest (pop) was not folklore, as is traditionally considered, but mainly the legendary letter of V.G. Belinsky to Gogol, which when com- pared with the text of the Nekrasov’s poem reveals a literal (literalist) similarity. How- ever, as shown in the work, a stable and independent point of view on the created image of pop Nekrasov had not, he was under the influence of one ideological associate, then another. Thus, the article demonstrates that the final image of pop was formed under the influence of another idol, N.A. Dobrolyubov, “popov’s son”, who helped Nekrasov cor- rect the final character of the hero of the chapter “Pop”. The article concludes that the early pseudonym of Nekrasov – Perepel’sky – and in the work on “To whom in Russia to live well” continues to be invisibly present and finds its semantic motivation.
