THE PHENOMENON OF THE UKRAINIAN DIASPORA IN CHINA (THE FIRST THIRD OF THE ХХ CENTURY)

Abstract

In the article, the author writes about the phenomenon of the Ukrainian diaspora in China, it was in the first third of the 20th century. The author of the article notes that the appearance of Ukrainian literature and culture in China is connected with artists who were in exile in Harbin, Shanghai and other regions of the country. The migration of Ukrainians to the countries of the Far East is due to the construction of the China-Eastern Railway and the resettlement of a large number of citizens to the northeast of China. The author of the article writes that Ukrainians settled in Harbin, Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao and Xinjiang. In the construction of the Ukrainian diaspora, the main factors were language, religion, culture and social forms. The author of the article analyzed materials from periodicals and archives. The author of the article proved that in the 1920s and 1930s, Harbin and Shanghai were the life centers of Ukrainian emigrants. The Ukrainian biweekly “On the Far East” contains articles, reviews, announcements, that help to understand the life of the Ukrainian community. In the article, the author notes that Y. Vonsovych, H. Totskyi, B. Voblii, I. Svit and others were among the prominent Ukrainians of the diaspora in China. The history and culture of China, everyday realities, receptions of Chinese art and traditions are represented in the works of diaspora writers. The author of the article emphasizes that the creation of the People’s Republic of China contributed to the growth of interest in Ukrainian literature. In the 20th century, meetings were held with writers, the works of Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Lesia Ukrainka, Oles Honchar, Maksym Rylskyi, Andrii Malyshko, Volodymyr Sosyura and others were translated. The author of the article proved that Ge Baoquan’s translations introduced Chinese readers to Ukrainian literature. Today, literary researchers in China are studying the works of Taras Shevchenko, Oles Honchar, and modern Ukrainian writers.
