EVOLUTION OF POLITICAL VIEWS OF TITA REVAKOVYCH ON THE MATERIAL OF CORRESPONDENCE WITH OLEKSANDR BARVINSKY (1885–1914)

Abstract

The purpose of the study: to analyze the correspondence of Tita Revakovich and OleksandrBarvinsky as a source for studying the political history of Ukrainians in Eastern Galicia in the late 19th andearly 20th centuries, to trace the evolution of the worldview of both figures and through the prism of epistolarywriting to assess their involvement in the formation of the Ukrainian political tradition. Research methods: historical-biographical, source-based, comparative-analytical and contextual methods, which made it possi- ble to trace changes in the political and cultural orientations of the addressees, as well as to reveal their con- tribution to the public life of Galicia. The scientific novelty lies in the introduction into scientific circulation of a systematic analysis of the letters of Tito Revakovych to Oleksandr Barvinsky (1885–1914), which haveso far remained outside the comprehensive study. The personal dimension of the relationship between the two leading figures of the “Narod” camp, their assessments of the policy of the “New Era”, the Muscovite move- ment, the internal contradictions of the Ukrainian environment and the processes of national self-awareness are highlighted. Conclusions: in the correspondence of Tito Revakovych and Oleksandr Barvinsky, one can trace the development of the conservative current of the Ukrainian movement in Eastern Galicia, the peak of its influence during the introduction of the policy of the “New Era”, as well as the gradual loss of positionsdue to the discrediting of the idea of Polish-Ukrainian cooperation.
