PUBLICATIONS FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE BILA TSERKVA WOMEN’S GYMNASIUM IN THE COLLECTIONS OF THE NBUV: HISTORY OF LIFE AND CURRENT STATE

Abstract

The purpose of the study is the history of the creation and development of the library of the Bila Tserkva Women’s Gymnasium, the analysis of its book collection stored in the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, as well as the determination of the scientific and cultural and educational value of the educational and artistic publications of the institution. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the introduction into scientific circulation of documentary materials on the library of the Bila Tserkva Women’s Gymnasium and the comprehensive characterization of a fragment of its book collection preserved in the funds of the National Library of Ukraine. For the first time, a systematic analysis of the quantitative and thematic composition of the fund was carried out, its structure, sources of acquisition and cultural and educational value in the context of the development of women’s education in the late 19th – early 20th centuries were determined. Conclusions. The study proved that the interaction of the Bila Tserkva Women’s Gymnasium with its subordinate library actually fully met the educational needs of the institution’s students and teachers. The specifics of teaching at the institution and the features of the formation of its library fund were determined. It was established that the library played an important role in the educational process and was an important center of the cultural and educational life of the institution’s students. The demand for book publications at the regional level reflected the social and national characteristics of the reading public, and the presence of a fund of foreign literature testified to the high educational level of the requests of students and teachers. The study confirmed that the gymnasium library became an important factor in the formation of the intellectual environment and the development of women’s education in the late 19th – early 20th centuries
