GERMAN-POLISH RELATIONS AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE STATUS OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE IN POLAND

Undoubtedly, the status of the German language in Poland must be consi- dered against a historical background. The interest taken in that language or the lack thereof reflects the mutual political relations throughout history. There are a number of stages, the first of which begins with the first contacts and ends with the partitions of Poland in the years 1772-1795. The second stage is the time between the partitions of Poland and the end of the World War I. The last stage is the period following the World War II. In order to show the problem discussed in a wider cultural perspective, a short historical outline of Polish-German relations from over a millen- nium is presented.
