Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the functioning of quotations in the paratextual space of graphic and non-graphic editions of Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny from the perspective of para-translation as a multi-vector practice that is not limited to a linguistically oriented approach. Quotations-reviews are singled out as a productive subtype of reflection on a work, circulating as a dynamic object of polygraphic manipulation and undergoing changes in accordance with the publication, reprinting, and cultural-linguistic context. The problem of terminological inconsistency regarding the characteristics of books with a distinct illustrative component is articulated, in particular the appropriateness of using the terms «graphic novel», «graphic edition», «graphic adaptation», etc. The concept of testimonial is outlined in brief. The study focuses on the examination of quotations placed on the inner and outer areas of the dust jacket, flap cover, and regular cover. A comparative analysis of the quotations presented with their original wording contained in the epitext field was conducted. Based on the materials described, the multifunctionality of quotations performing informational, marketing, expressive-evaluative, and evaluative-legitimate roles has been determined. A correlative relationship has been established between the directive components of K. Burns' review and the structure of the sections of the work, which confirms the consistent and systematic nature of the paratextual organization of the publication. Against the backdrop of the quotations-reviews that prevail in the publications, L. Kolakovsky's allographic quotation, which serves as an epigraph, is considered, thereby indicating the need for a systematization of the diversity of elements of the corresponding genre. Thanks to scientific research, the theoretical understanding of paratranslation as a complex phenomenon has been deepened, signaling the need to take into account paratextual representations in translation practice, which acts as the framing of the work and influences the formation of a holistic linguocultural reception among the target readership.
