PRESENTATION OF THE CONCEPT YOUNG IN THE DICTIONARIES OF THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

The article investigates the concept YOUNG in the Ukrainian language. The analysis was based on the data, obtained from the lexicographical sources, namely from an etymological dictionary, explanatory and phraseological dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms and antonyms of the Ukrainian language. The aim of the research is to analyze the verbalization of the concept YOUNG in the system of the Ukrainian language. This analysis is a part of a wider investigation based on the method of cognitive definition, which involves also the analysis of the data of a survey, conducted with the native Ukrainian language speakers of different age and of both sexes in equal quantities, and the data, selected from the corpus of the texts of the Ukrainian language (artistic and journalistic). The results of the research in the first stage are in the explication of the specific semantic traits of the lexeme young, that can be divided into those, that characterize the people (‘age’, ‘the role of the groom at the wedding’, ‘belonging to the younger generation in the family’, ‘force’, ‘liveliness’, ‘cheerfulness’, ‘presence of vitality, energy, creativity’, ‘spiritual joy’, ‘inexperienced’, ‘arrogance’, ‘worthless’) and those, relating to animals, plants and inanimate objects (‘fresh’, ‘short period of the existence’). The analysis reveals the phenomenon of ambivalence of the evaluation (presence of positive or negative evaluation in different meanings of the lexeme young), which is motivated by the entrenched collective stereotypes in the minds of the speakers, that are based on the conceptualization of the world. This confirms one of the main postulates of the Cognitive Linguistics that meaning іs the conceptualization.
