PRESENTATION OF THE CONCEPT OLD IN THE DICTIONARIES OF THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

This article investigates the concept OLD in the system of the Ukrainian language and explicates its main semantic traits. The analysis was conducted on the materials, extracted from an etymological dictionary, explanatory and phraseological dictionaries and dictionaries of synonyms and antonyms of the Ukrainian language. This analysis is the part of the research of the mentioned concept by the method of cognitive definition, providing further appeal to the material of the corpuses of the Ukrainian language and the results of a survey conducted with the native Ukrainian language speakers, taking into account the gender factor and age group. The result of the first phase of the investigation is the distribution of the selected semantic features of the lexeme old to those, relating to people, animals, plants, and those, that describe inanimate objects. Accordingly, the article describes the oppositions “old – young” and “old – little” in relation to living beings and opposition “old – new”, which describes the inanimate objects in the Ukrainian language worldview. The study also reveals ambivalence of the evaluation of the lexeme old, motivated by stereotypes in the minds of the speakers, which depends on the conceptualization of the external world. This confirms the main claims of the Cognitive Linguistics that meaning is a conceptualization.
