EMPHASIZING OF PARTICIPLES IN THE POEM „AENEID” BY I. P. KOTLYAREVSKYI

Abstract

Nowadays the Ukrainian Accentology has significant achievements through the scientific researches such Ukrainian linguists as O. Potebnya, I. Ohienko, L. Bulakhovskyi, Z. Veselovskyi, V. Sklyarenko, V. Vynnytskyi, Russian linguists – O. Shahmatov, V. Dybo, A. Zaliznyak, V. Kolesov, R.Bulatov, S. Nikolaev, V. Zamyatin and foreign linguists – G. Geert, F. de Saussure, E. Kourylovych, V. Kiparskyi. However, the history of Ukrainian literary emphasis has not been investigated yet. Therefore, to study the problem of the formation of Ukrainian literary emphasis is important to research it in the poetry by I. Kotlyarevskyi, who is founder of the new Ukrainian literary language. The poem „Aeneid” of I. Kotlyarevskyi was already investigated by Ukrainian accentologists. Emphasizing of nouns has been explored by A. Zynyakova, accentuation of adjectives, numerals, pronouns and adverbs by V. Zhelyazkova. The purpose of this article is: to analyze the emphasizing of participles in the poem by I. Kotlyarevskyi, and compare it with emphasizing in modern Ukrainian literary language. The analysis of emphasizing of 60 participles in the language of the poem „Aeneid” by I. Kotlyarevskyi gives us the reason to believe that the author’s general emphasizing has no differences from modern literary standards. Only in some contexts we can observe the differences with modern norm of accentuation, but such examples are few, occasional and usually subordinated to rhythmic and melodic structure of the poem. At the same time the emphasizing of participles in the poem reflects the actual language practice of that time.
