TAXONOMY OF ALLUSIVE UNITS MARKERS

Abstract

The article deals with the types of marking of allusive elements in British modernism literature. The aim of the article is identification of explicit and implicit markers of allusions in literary texts. Such markers as italics, capitalization (proper names), barbarisms, brackets, broken lines, footnotes are referred to explicit means. Implicit ones include repetitions (parallelism, assonance, alliteration), contrasts, metaphors, sound implicitness (similarity of sound). It was determined that the recognition of allusions depends on several factors, including the popularity of the source-text, reader’s competence and way of presentation of units in the text. The main results of the study are reflected in the proposed classification of allusive markers in literature and are supported by examples of different types of markers found in the texts of British writers. The value of the study lies in structuring allusive markers that help to identify references in literature. The classification can be partially applied in the analysis of texts of media or scientific nature.
