POLISH BORROWINGS OF PROPER NAMES IN VOLYNIAN POLISSIA AND PODLASIE SUBDIALECTS

The article deals with Polish borrowings of proper names in West Polissia dialect of the Ukrainian language on the material of Volynian Polissia and Podlasie subdialects functioning in different countries. The relevance of this research is determined by the need for a comprehensive analysis of proper names of Polish origin which have remained on the periphery of dialectological and onomastic studies so far. The aim of the study is to compare the features of the use of anthroponymic Polish borrowings in two dialect groups as well as to find out their structural and motivational specifics. The research material includes surnames, names, their variants and nicknames registered in dictionaries, dialect texts and literature sources. The research demonstrates that Polish borrowings in the anthroponomy occurred in different times: in the Volynian Polissia subdialects they are mostly related to the interwar period when the region was part of Poland while in the Podlasie subdialects the Polish influence is continuous and due to constant linguistic contact. No new borrowings of Polish surnames among Volynian Polissia inhabitants in the postwar period have been detected, but there are defined proper names borrowed form Polish among variants of proper names (Matěusz ˂ Matvii, Jantek ˂ Anton, Józsek ˂ Josyp, Jákub ˂ Jaków, Gęna ˂ Jevheniia, Kásʹa ˂ Kateryna), a bit less of them among nicknames (Basya, Vladzo, Kazik, Ksiądz, Polachók, Tómash, Tsięcia). It has been determined that variants of personal names are the most productive and dynamic layer of onymic vocabulary because it reacts most quickly to interlingual contacts. There are 161 items detected among borrowings of Polish surnames, 128 items among borrowings of Polish names and their variants and 94 items among borrowings of Polish nicknames. The results obtained deepen our understanding of onomastic processes in multilingual environments and are important for further dialectological research.
