TEACHING CADETS OF MARITIME HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS TO READ ENGLISH PROFESSIONAL DOCUMENTATION: THE RESULTS OF PEDAGOGICAL EXPERIMENT

The article presents the study of the results of experimental and research approbation of the methods of teaching cadets of the maritime institutions how to read the authentic professional documentation in English. In this paper the author describes the didactic and methodological principles of teaching how to read the authentic professional documentation in English, the algorithm of methodical actions and the corresponding system of exercises for achieving the aims of the research. This article describes the stages of the experimental approbation of the suggested teaching methods, and the following criteria apparatus for assessing the language knowledge, and speech skills of cadets of the marine institutions, taking into account the need for urgent and safe vessel sailing: a language criterion with the indicators: receptive understanding of the words under study, and their reproductive actualization in English; pre-speech criterion with the indicators: understanding the meaning of the text under study, reproduction of the contents of the text, application of the obtained information in the educational and professional activities; speech criterion with the indicators: the speed of silent reading the complete training sailing directions numbering 900 – 1000 words, accuracy of perceiving professional reliable information, adequacy of the application of the obtained textual information in the educational and professional activities; production criterion with the indicators: reading authentic navigation information covering 900 – 1000 words, readiness to fulfill the professional actions after receiving the information from the authentic sailing directions, the adequacy of the production processes to real-existing navigation conditions). This paper describes the conditions of the experiment conducting, including the selection of cadets, who took part in the experimental work, and their division into experimental and control groups. This article presents the results of the pre-experimental testing of the cadets’ knowledge, experimental teaching and final testing of cadets’ knowledge. It also compares the obtained outcomes concerning the skills of reading the authentic marine documentation by the cadets of the experimental groups and control groups.
